About us

Established in 2005, China NGO Network for International Exchanges (CNIE) is an NGO umbrella dedicated to international exchanges and cooperation. It is mainly composed of NGOs from various social fields engaging in peace and disarmament, social development, science and education, culture and art, health care, environmental protection, democracy and human rights, ethnic and religious affairs, policy advocacy and law, business and commerce, public welfare and charity, poverty alleviation and disability assistance as well as women and youth affairs. Now CNIE has 310 member organizations.

After being awarded the general consultative status to ECOSOC in 2008, CNIE has played an important role in supporting the participation of Chinese NGOs in such major events of the United Nations as the UN Conference on Climate Change, sessions of the UN Human Rights Council, Annual UN DPI/NGO Conferences, and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development. By making presentations, submitting reports and hosting side meetings and exhibitions during these events, CNIE has not only become the mouthpiece of the Chinese civil society in the international community, but also related extensively to institutions within the UN system and other international NGOs. CNIE has also played host to or a part in major multi-lateral NGO events like the Global Summit of Women, Asia-Europe People’s Forum and the World Social Forum.

To facilitate people-to-people cooperation between China and African countries, CNIE launched China-Africa People’s Forum in 2011 which, to date, has alternated six times in China and African countries, and has become a major platform for the non-governmental exchanges between China and Africa. General Secretary Xi Jinping attended the second Forum in person and sent congratulatory letters to the third, fifth and sixth Forums. In 2016, CNIE hosted Civil Society 20 China 2016, and received a congratulatory letter from General Secretary Xi Jinping. In 2017, in response to President Xi Jinping’s initiative at the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, CNIE initiated the establishment of the Silk Road NGO Cooperation Network, and General Secretary Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the first Silk Road NGO Cooperation Network Forum.

In April 2019, CNIE launched the Silk Road Community Building Initiative at the Thematic Session of People-to-People Connectivity of the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, which has by far promoted the establishment of nearly 600 pairs of cooperation partnerships between Chinese and foreign NGOs along the Belt and Road and the implementation of more than 300 livelihood cooperation projects in developing countries along the Belt and Road. In 2020, CNIE initiated the Joint Action for Defeating the COVID-19 within the Framework of the Silk Road Community Building Initiative. More than 60 social organizations, enterprises, and NGOs have united under the framework of the Joint Action and launched more than 100 international anti-pandemic joint campaigns in over 60 countries with a total donation of nearly RMB 200 million. At the same time, the Joint Action has supported the Silk Road NGO Cooperation Network and its members in hosting nearly 200 online experience exchange activities.

In 2021, to implement the important instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping, CNIE initiated livelihood projects under the framework of Silk Road Community Building Initiative for Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member countries, and issued the “Silk Road Community Building Initiative” China-Africa People-to-People Friendship and Partnership Program (2021-2023).

In April 2022, CNIE launched the “Glimpses Into Present-Day China: Maximizing Synergy For Global Development” Thematic Events Series, and jointly established the Working Committee on International Volunteer Service with the China Volunteer Service Federation, aiming to further promote China’s volunteerism to the world. In August 2022, CNIE hosted the International Civil Society Solidarity Conference on the Global Development Initiative, and General Secretary Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the Conference. The Conference announced the establishment of the “International Civil Society Implementation of Global Development Initiative Project Library” and launched the International NGOs Network for Poverty Reduction Cooperation. Over 1,000 NGOs, think tanks, enterprises, and media jointly signed the Joint Declaration of the International Civil Society on Working Together to Implement the Global Development Initiative.

In October 2023, CNIE launched the Action on Silk Road People-to-people Connectivity as an upgrade of the Silk Road Community Building Initiative at the Thematic Forum on People-to-people Connectivity of the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. Under the framework of the action, CNIE will, in the following five years, continue to carry out in various fields inclusive international exchanges and cooperation that benefit all, coordinate and channel resources from all walks of life, build more signature and flagship projects of livelihood improvement and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, so as to effectively enhancing the people-to-people connectivity among Belt and Road cooperation countries.

CNIE, along with the broad civil society in China, will always remain devoted to deepen exchanges and cooperation with national, regional and international counterparts around the world, thus contributing to safeguarding world peace, promoting common development and building a community with a shared future for mankind.
